Carla Frederika Erasmus was born in Durban, South Africa in 1985.
After completing a BA Fine Arts degree at the University of Pretoria in 2007, she moved to the Netherlands. She worked as a freelance photographer and started her career to support an independent fine-art practice.
Erasmus has since been included in several group exhibitions locally and abroad, including The Photographers Gallery, Barnard Gallery and Zuid Afrika Huis in Amsterdam.
She predominately shoots on film. The film augments the surreality of the image, creating over-saturated photographs evoking fragmented and stifling atmospheres. These moody and softly focused landscapes create a visual idiom that is abstract in this body of work, as seen in Landskap and Sojourn.
Her shift to Vernacular Photography is her love of the figurative and collecting slide film to produce new artworks from found imagery, focusing on details of a moment, captured by unknown amateur photographers.
Carla Erasmus is constantly & currently working on new projects and bodies of work. She Lives and works in Cape Town, South Africa as co-owner of the Furniture and Product company, Bofred & continuously produces as a Fine Arts Photographer.
